The Start-up Centre imparts skills in curricular and extracurricular events and provides support to accompany those interested in setting up their own business. In cooperation with chairs from different faculties, joint courses are designed and implemented in order to discover and promote subject-specific start-up potential at the university. In order to implement university-wide measures to raise awareness of start-up topics, the Start-up Center was institutionalised as a central operating unit under the direction of Prof. Dr. Christine Volkmann and is located in the university co-working space "Freiraum" on Arrenberg.

As part of the Germany-wide university competition "EXIST Potentiale", the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has honoured the University of Wuppertal for its concept for establishing a university-wide start-up centre. Prof Dr Christine Volkmann and her team from the Chair of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Transformation and the UNESCO Chair of Entrepreneurship and Intercultural Management are responsible for this success. With 1.9 million euros in funding, innovative start-up potential is now to be tapped and thus the number of university spin-offs increased. Special emphasis will be placed on the promotion of sustainable start-up projects.
