The final module examination is thus divided into four equal parts. No seminar paper has to be written in the seminar.

Sub-module 1: Fundamentals of start-up management
The course "Fundamentals of Start-up Management" is the first part of a two-semester lecture on the topic of start-up qualification for students of all faculties, in particular those interested in starting a business, participants from the optional area of the Combinatorial Bachelor and students of various other degree programmes (not BSc WiWi!). The aim is to provide participants with a sound and practical grounding in the commercial basics that are essential for a successful business start-up. The following topics are covered in the course: Business plan preparation, financing, marketing, choice of location and legal form, personnel and organisation, founder personality, start-up support. This content is rounded off with the follow-up course "Specific aspects of start-up management", which is offered in the summer semester and deals in more detail with accounting issues and forms of company succession / company takeover.

In addition to an in-depth examination of accounting issues and the analysis of annual financial statements, topics relating to company valuation, company takeovers and company succession are covered. In addition, individual business management aspects, such as the choice of legal form, are examined in depth in order to create a comprehensive understanding of the framework conditions for determining the profits of young companies.

Sub-module 3: Case studies on start-up management
The exercise accompanying the lecture deepens individual aspects of the lectures. The case study exercise is designed to be strongly action-orientated, for example by practising techniques for drawing up and evaluating business plans under supervision. The case studies are worked on in interdisciplinary student teams. Students work on case studies from various specialisation areas, e.g. start-up financing (VC financing, mezzanine forms of financing, internal financing), start-up marketing (market research; creation of marketing plans) and start-up funding (funding mix planning). Students apply various business analysis and evaluation methods that are adapted to the context of business start-ups.

Start of course: 30.10.2025

Sub-module 4: Seminar on start-up management
The course is generally aimed at students and those interested in start-ups and deals with the interface between a microeconomic view of business start-ups and a macroeconomic view of the start-up process. For example, the microeconomic effects of government measures to promote start-ups are analysed. This applies in particular to measures of indirect start-up support as the organisation of legal framework conditions for start-up activity. Another thematic focus of the seminar is the reciprocal interplay of institutional framework conditions for start-ups and institutional change influenced by start-ups.
Skills taught:
- Ability to independently analyse economic policy measures in the context of start-up support
- Expertise in assessing institutional framework conditions for start-up activities
